Conclusion

Community Action Guide Phase:

Tree Equity is about much more than just trees. It is about lifting people up in all neighborhoods, cities and towns to live healthy, vibrant, and enriching lives. To solve the climate change and systemic inequality issues we all face, a long-term commitment is needed. That commitment can only be sustained by a strong set of values rooted in community. And building community is a dynamic, people—driven process. It is as challenging as it is transformational and the work is worth the effort. The reward will be more inclusive communities that are not defined by their lack of tree canopy or health disparities but rather by the many voices and partnerships that collaborate to make a difference at their local level. The sum of those many community actions will make healthier and more vibrant cities for many generations to come.

This guide is one resource amongst many, but it aims to draw critical connections between forestry, equity and community engagement practice. While there are examples of this kind of work out in the field, it is not widespread and requires an iterative approach. Adapt this guide and associated worksheets to your needs and revisit different sections as you go along in your community action journey.
