Los Angeles is dividing the creation of its new Urban Forest Management Plan into two distinct phases. The FIRST STEP uses consultants, community engagement and state-of-the-art tools [including the Vibrant Cities Lab Assessment and Goal-Setting Tool] to achieve consensus on the current state of LA’s urban forest, and set goals for the future. This work will provide the basis for the second stage, the creation of the Plan itself.
This approach — both rigorous and comprehensive — can be applied by other municipalities and in other contexts. In brief, a benchmark for urban forestry planning.
